The Hovey Book describes the English Ancestry and American Descendants of Daniel Hovey (1618-1692) of Ipswich, Massachusetts. In 1635, Daniel Hovey was the first Hovey to come to America, and our family is directly descended from him. The book was compiled and published in 1914 under the auspices of the Daniel Hovey Association, which is now defunct. In this book, a family crest was identified to be a hand holding a pen, with a scroll underneath, bearing the legend, "Hinc Orior" (by this I rise).
I recently purchased a PDF version of The Hovey Book on eBay for $12. There are plenty of publishing houses out there who will happily charge you anywhere from $65 - $300 for a hardcover print, or you can download it here free of charge.
That's right. Free. Despite Sonny Bono's attempts to keep things copyrighted forever, the copyright of this volume has long since expired and it is now part of the public domain. Anyone can legally distribute it.
Download The Hovey Book in PDF form [35 MB].
If the link becomes broken at a future date, email me.
This is a PDF of scanned pages, so the text is not searchable. But, the book is fairly well organized. All 600 pages of it.

I would love to receive a copy of this book as I was not able to download. My Grandmother Nettie Baker Hovey her Mother was Anna S. Hovey and her mother was Anna M Hovey and I am trying to piece the family together. kellysue85020@yahoo.com
Hovey isn't a name I have came across in my geneolgical research, however, our crest is the same. Verbal history has it coming from the Browns, something that is hard to dig up because of the popularity of the name.
I tried to download the book and would REALLY like to get a pdf copy . . . any chance?

I am the daughter of Maj. Gen. Burton Murdock Hovey (deceased). I am attemtpting to find out the name of my father's paternal grandparents and any other Hovey connections. My grandfather obtained a copy of The Hovey Book, which is now in my possession. There are no Burton Hoveys listed in the book, so I am at a lost to find out which branch of the family we belong to. Dad had the same name as his father. His mother was Eva Florence Heatherington Hovey. They lived in White Plains, New York.
I am a Hovey living in Maine. We are just starting to look into our history. My Father is Leo, His Father was Wallace and Arthur was his father. We too are decendents of Daniel Hovey. Could I get a PDF copy of the book? You can't download it from this page. Thank you for any help you can give. My email is tammyg@pioneercable.net
I am actually a Daniel Hovey, son of a Robert Hovey, grandson to a Ira F Hovey from NJ. I have tried to connect the dots with limited success.
I guess that's what happens when you start early, haha! We Hoveys have sure spread out over the years and the country. To think that we all came from one 17 year old kid who left home in Essex, England, in 1635! Wow! Byron Hovey, born in New Brunswick, Canada.
I would like a copy of the Hovey Book. I am a descendant of James Franklin Hovey (1820-1897). I believe his father was David Hovey (1796-1866) but I cannot find detailed information regarding birth; at least not on Ancestry.com.
I've posted updated links to PDFs in a new post at the top of this blog.
